The Organization
Founded in 1971, California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (CAL/ACEP) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit association representing California's emergency physicians. With more than 2,500 members or approximately 80% of board-certified emergency physicians in the state, CAL/ACEP is the largest state chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians,
a national medical specialty society founded in 1968, that claims more
than 27,000 emergency physician-members in all 50 states, plus chapters
representing emergency physicians in the armed forces and in Puerto
Rico.
CAL/ACEP members are board-certified emergency physicians
who practice in emergency departments as diverse as their patients.
Whether in academic or community hospitals, urban or rural, CAL/ACEP
members represent the spectrum of emergency physicians in California.
The Specialty
The medical specialty of emergency medicine was recognized as the 23rd medical specialty in 1979 by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Emergency physicians or ER doctors "[focus] on the immediate decision making and action necessary to
prevent death or any further disability both in the pre-hospital
setting by directing emergency medical technicians and in the emergency
department. The emergency physician provides immediate recognition,
evaluation, care, stabilization and disposition of a generally
diversified population of adult and pediatric patients in response to
acute illness and injury." (American Board of Emergency Medicine)
The Mission
CAL/ACEP's
mission is to support emergency physicians in providing the highest
quality of care to all patients and to their communities.
The Vision
CAL/ACEP's vision is that all people in California have timely access to high-quality emergency care, which is recognized as an essential public service within a comprehensive emergency medical services system, capable of coordinated response to disasters and health care crises, and in which the personal and practice rights, safety, education, wellness and longevity of emergency physicians are promoted and protected.
